Often marketed as "natural quartz" or just as "quartz," these counter materials are actually man-made materials known as "engineered stone." Although they are not natural, compared to granite they're nearly as hard and scratch resistant, similarly stain resistant, non porous, and they are available in a wide range of colors.
For example, engineered quartz is available in solid colors (unlike any natural stone) and they can be manufactured to closely approximate some colors and surface finishes of marble, quartzite, and simple granites.
Quartz countertop formulations contain a specific "volume percentage" of two material types (solids and chemicals). The ratio of solids (e.g., crystallized quartz, amorphous quartz, sand grains, mirrored glass, and possibly metal flakes) varies between 65-76%. The chemical portion includes resin binders, resin stabilizers, pigments and UV inhibitors. These materials make up between 24-35%.
Quartz countetops are manufactured in two ways. First, the solids and chemicals are sorted and mixed carefully together. Second, they are processed using either a heated vibrating vacuum molding system (called the Bretonstone process), or a heated, partial vacuum molding process.
Each approach enables proper mixing of the solids with the resin binders and for desired coloration. However, counters made using the Bretonstone process eliminate all air pockets or "voids for much better strength and stability. After manufacturing is complete, the heated quartz slabs are cooled slowly, then trimmed, finished, and shipped - much like natural stone counters.
The final "quartz" product is very durable, comes in a variety of surface finishes, is virtually non-porous and is stain resistant. However, keep in mind that engineered quartz is NOT an outdoor countertop.
